‘To be Remembered Now, It Means So Much to Them’

Members of VFW Post 4912 in West Point, Nebraska, are praised with ‘quilts of valor’

The Quilts of Valor Foundation (QOV), in collaboration with the “Just-a-Stitch” quilt guild, recently made a pit stop at VFW Post 4912 in West Point, Neb., where 14 members of the Post were presented with quilts.

“Just-a-Stitch,” based out of West Point, designed, sewed and presented the quilts that the Post members received. The guild has been collaborating with the QOV since 2018 and has awarded more than 150 quilts.

The hand-made quilts serve both to comfort those who were “touched by war,” as well as to honor and remember their service.

“To be given a quilt, it’s very meaningful,” said Beverly Wieler, a member of VFW Post 4912 Auxiliary and whose husband was awarded a quilt. “Some of the recipients served back in the Korean War, and to be remembered yet now, it means so much to them.”

The quilt ceremony was held on July 4 at the American Veterans Park in West Point. Members of VFW Post 4912 Auxiliary passed out water bottles and cookies, as well as distributed Buddy Poppies and U.S. flags to veterans’ homes.

Wieler, who also is a member of the “Just-a-Stitch" quilt guild, says that although finishing a quilt is rewarding, the “best part” for guild members is seeing the turnout of family and friends at the quilt presentations.

“The quilts are a warm ‘thank you’ to those who served to keep us free,” she added.
