Diamond Moss joined the U.S. Army Reserves in 2013 to help with her college tuition. She currently lives in Danville, Illinois, with her son Marquis.
During her deployment to Kuwait and Afghanistan in 2020, she spent time searching online for scholarships to apply for when she got home.
“I saw the VFW's ‘Sport Clips Help A Hero Scholarship’ when I was overseas and applied immediately when I got home,” Moss said.
She attends the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and will receive a Master of Social Work degree. Moss plans to work as a mental health therapist once she graduates.
“I chose this career path because I struggle every day with Post Traumatic Stress,” she said. “I went to see a therapist because of that, and they helped me so much.
“The scholarship was incredibly helpful during my bachelor’s program. It covered the majority of my tuition and fees,” Moss said. “My overall student debt is significantly lower because of it.
“I want other veterans to know it’s never too late to go back to school. If the opportunity is there, take it! Thank you to everyone who made this scholarship possible. Thank you for helping me further my education.”
