VFW Salutes the Navy on Its 251st Birthday

From a single vessel to the world’s most powerful sea-fighting force, our sailors continue to defend America’s shores

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Today the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is proud to join a grateful nation in celebrating the 251st birthday of the United States Navy, the steadfast maritime force that has protected and defended the shores of America, strategic interests abroad and global sea lanes for two and a half centuries.

On Oct. 13, 1775, a resolution of the Continental Congress established what is now the United States Navy, authorizing "a swift sailing vessel, to carry ten carriage guns, and a proportionable number of swivels, with 80 men" to be fitted for a three-month cruise. Though briefly disbanded after the Revolutionary War, the Navy was permanently reestablished by the Naval Act of 1794, signed into law by President George Washington.

VFW celebrates the U.S. Navy birthdayIn the 251 years since, the Navy has grown from a single armed vessel into the most powerful sea-fighting force in history. Through carrier strike groups, submarines and expeditionary forces, our nation’s sailors stand ready around the clock to project power, deter aggression and keep open the sea lanes that global trade and American prosperity depend on.

As we recognize and honor this anniversary, the VFW reaffirms its commitment to supporting all sailors and their families. Their willingness to deploy far from home, often for months at a time during conflict and peace, in defense of our nation's interests is a sacrifice that deserves our lasting gratitude.

Please join the more than 1.3 million members of the VFW and its Auxiliary in saluting America's sailors, past and present, for 251 years of standing the watch.
