“Growing up, I admired those in uniform,” said Dawn Frazier, “especially my grandfather, who was a Vietnam veteran. It compelled me to follow the same path, and the military ended up giving me more than I expected.”
Frazier served in the Army for nine years. She was grateful to learn discipline, resilience and the true meaning of teamwork. But with those life lessons came hardships that left a different kind of impression.
“I have PTSD caused by high stress and traumatic events during my military service,” she explained. “That led to anxiety, hypervigilance, sleep issues and concentration difficulties.”
Frazier’s symptoms worsened over time, eventually affecting her relationships, stress levels and daily life. She sought help from the VFW and was connected with VFW Accredited Service Officer Welma Jackson in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
“Working with Mr. Jackson was truly life-changing,” Frazier said. “He guided me through every step of the claims process and never made me feel rushed or ignored.
“Instead,” Frazier continued, “I felt seen, heard and confident that my voice mattered because he took the time to listen to my story and understand the challenges I faced with my service-connected conditions.”
With Jackson’s help, Frazier received a disability rating she was happy with. But that wasn’t all.
“The VA claims process can be overwhelming, but Mr. Jackson showed me that you don’t have to face it alone,” she said. “He restored my hope and trust in the process.”
Frazier encourages veterans to seek help from other professionals like Jackson, who realize their sacrifices and want to help them get what they’re owed.
“My service left lasting effects, but I’m proud of my accomplishments and grateful for the honor of having served,” Frazier said. “The VFW team understands the system and genuinely wants to help you receive the benefits you’ve earned.”
